Build skills, gain confidence, and thrive in a collaborative culture that values curiosity, initiative, and people who care.

Learning with support

At GR, your student experience is shaped by hands-on learning and genuine support. You’ll work closely with partners and associates, gaining practical experience across a variety of practice areas, developing skills that will serve you throughout your career.

Our mentorship-focused approach means you’re not just observing – you’re contributing, asking questions, building relationships, and discovering what excites you most about the law. By exploring different areas of practice with guidance along the way, you’ll build a strong foundation for a confident and rewarding legal career.

Experience to grow

Joining our student program is an opportunity to build the skills and confidence you need to thrive in your legal career. As an articling student, you’ll work on real files alongside experienced lawyers, developing practical abilities and gaining insight into how the law is applied day-to-day.

Through hands-on work, mentorship, and thoughtful feedback, you’ll grow quickly and meaningfully. The relationships you build and the range of legal experience you gain will stay with you, forming a strong foundation for your career and opening doors to future opportunities in the profession.

Collegial. Collaborative. Connected.

GR is known for its supportive and collaborative culture. As a student, you’ll be welcomed into a team that values open communication, shared learning, and working together. You’ll have opportunities to learn from lawyers across the firm, gaining insight, guidance, and encouragement as you build your skills.

This collegial environment not only makes your day-to-day work more engaging but also helps you form meaningful relationships and a strong professional network. By contributing, asking questions, and exchanging ideas, you’ll grow in both confidence and capability, setting the foundation for a fulfilling legal career.

Programs

Where your legal career takes shape

Our articling program is designed to help you grow into a confident and capable lawyer. You’ll work alongside our lawyers on a wide range of matters: attending client meetings, assisting with transactions, drafting legal documents, and gaining exposure to motions, trials, and administrative hearings.

As your interests develop, we’ll do our best to support them. With our collegial and supportive approach, you’ll quickly feel part of the team, building relationships with mentors and colleagues while taking part in seminars, training sessions, and hands-on learning opportunities. You’ll also receive thoughtful feedback twice a year to help you understand your progress and strengths.

Students rotate through three broad practice areas during articles:

  • Dispute Resolution (civil and commercial litigation, insurance, health, employment)
  • Real Estate / Tax (real estate and municipal law, tax and estate planning)
  • Corporate / Commercial (business law, immigration, technology and IP, financial services, entertainment, securities, municipal law, non-profit and charities)

You’ll experience the practice of law from the inside out—working closely with both associates and partners, accessing meaningful professional resources, and taking part in practice group lunches and social events. It’s a collaborative environment where you’ll feel supported, challenged, and encouraged to find your place in the profession.

Frequently asked questions

We are a full-service firm that offers a variety of practice groups including corporate/commercial, litigation, tax and estates, financial services, real estate, health, intellectual property, and transportation and logistics. Students, whether in the summer or during articling, are provided ample opportunity to work with lawyers in several different practices, gaining useful insights and practical experience, further developing their interests.

GR’s lawyers are fully invested in each student’s learning experience. One of the greatest advantages of working here is our collegial culture and the opportunity to gain real hands-on legal experience. The firm services a wide range of clients across a broad range of industries, and students enjoy the opportunity to assume meaningful responsibility on multiple files.

There is no exact formula or specific set of characteristics. Our students – and our lawyers – come from various academic, work, and cultural backgrounds. The one thing they do all have in common is enthusiasm, readiness to learn, and dedication to excellence.

Mentorship is an integral part of the GR experience. Each student is paired with a mentor during the summer term who will continue this mentorship through articling. Mentors meet with their students on a regular basis and have access to all of GR’s lawyers who provide students with invaluable advice and insight. It is not uncommon for our students to have multiple mentor relationships at the firm.

In both the summer term and the articling program, students gain access to a wide range of legal work and can discover more about the areas of law they find most interesting. There is a rotation system during articling, but not during the shorter summer term. Our summer students experience the firm’s culture and environment. The articling rotation system ensures that each student experiences both litigation and corporate-focused assignments while still enjoying the flexibility to seek out work from any practice group they choose.

Students are assigned work from associates or partners at the firm. These assignments range from research projects, drafting memorandums to attending court, assisting on corporate transactions, and a variety of other tasks. Additionally, students are encouraged to network with lawyers to receive files on a more specific, one-to-one basis as it relates to their specific interests.
